Freedom to Choose

Lately, I’m sure everyone’s mind has been on politics, and the election coming up in just a few days now. Actually, I think it would be rather difficult to not be aware of what is currently happening in the political field . . . with television, radio, social media, newspapers, and the multitude of signs gracing the land.

Last week I talked about Columbus Day, a day set aside in honor of Christopher Columbus, the discovery of the “New World,” and the founding of our great country and homeland, America.

A popular slogan we hear often today in the current political climate is “Make America Great Again.” On a daily newscast the other day, I heard someone say, “What makes America great is that here we have the freedom to choose.” His words lodged in my mind and I’ve given much thought to them.

Freedom to choose is definitely important, but there are a lot of things that make America great. I’m reminded of these words in a song: America, America, God shed his grace on thee . . . (from “America the Beautiful” by Katherine Lee Bates). God truly has shed his grace on America.

We are privileged to be citizens of the United States of America, and to enjoy all the blessings God has given us. Freedom to choose is a God-given right, and it is a privilege to be able to exercise that right. But, if we are not ever alert and watchful, our freedoms could be lost.

I sincerely hope every American citizen with the right to vote will exercise that privilege. VOTE . . .  Your vote may be the one that swings the election!

 Grace and peace to you,

Mary Emma
