A Memorable Memorial Day

I’m not very good with physics, but I would really like to know why time goes faster when you are older, than in your youth. It seems like we just celebrated Memorial Day, and already we are celebrating the Fourth of July!

Memorial Day at my house this year was truly memorable. As the day drew to an end, a yen for my daily coffee nightcap kicked in, but when I turned on the faucet—there was no water. Suspecting the worst, I opened the door to the basement, and sure enough—everything downstairs had gone for a swim! A pipe had burst and there was water everywhere! I’m still cleaning up the mess.

All of this means . . . not much time for writing. An instructor said to me once, “It’s difficult to write when you are anxious.” She was so right! I hope I don’t have any more Memorial Days as memorable as this one!

To get serious though about this special day, I believe that most of us have lost loved ones in the armed services. And, it is indeed an honor to remember those individuals on this day set aside especially for this purpose. As for me, I’ve an uncle, a nephew, a cousin, classmates, neighbors, (and my father adds): relatives in the past who fought and died in the Civil War.

These men and women who fought and died for this great country in which we live (and for us), deserve to be remembered, and honored. Remembering brings tears to our eyes and sadness to our hearts, but we hold them up with pride for their selflessness and courage. They fought and died that we might live—and have basements that get flooded—and all things dear. Always, and forever, we will remember!

Grace and peace to you,

Mary Emma
