from the heart . . .
Valentine’s day, February 14th, just celebrated last week, is traditionally our day for hearts and flowers . . . and heart-shaped boxes of candy!
I’m not so sure, though, if our new national Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., approves of that last item, candy.
Secretary Kennedy, just confirmed last week in his new position, wants to help America become healthy again, and too much candy, I think we all know, works against that goal. If—we eat too much!
I saw the new Secretary on a local news program the other day, and something he said really warmed my heart.
Mr. Kennedy was asked how he became so interested in the health issues facing our nation today. He replied that for years he has gotten down on his knees—every day—and asked God to put him in a position to be able to help with these issues so prevalent in our society: drug addiction, obesity, diabetes, etc. And, he said, God sent Donald J. Trump.
We need to hear our leaders speak of their faith, and of how God has worked in their lives, as Secretary Kennedy did. And as President Trump has been doing recently. It is comforting, and encouraging, to know that our leaders are looking to the Lord for guidance and direction as they carry out their responsibilities.
But, we do have our traditions, and our celebrations. So we might ask then . . . What about that heart-shaped box of candy?
Someone very wise (King Solomon, perhaps), once said, Do everything in moderation.
Possibly that might be Secretary Kennedy’s advice to all of us, as well.
Grace and peace to you,
Mary Emma
