. . . celebrating poetry
APRIL IS “NATIONAL POETRY MONTH” . . . and I am celebrating poetry!
We all remember:
Little Bo-Peep has lost her sheep,
and can’t tell where to find them;
leave them alone and they will come home,
wagging their tails behind them.
And then, along came Dr. Seuss and his “Green Eggs and Ham.” Later, Robert Frost, with his beautiful, “The woods are lovely, dark and deep . . ..” And there are many others who have enhanced our lives with poetry.
Rhymes, poetry . . . From the time we are toddlers and all through life, it seems there’s something about poetry and rhyme that draws us to it. I fell in love with poetry as a little child, looking through books in my grandparents’ attic. Usually, they would allow me to take one or two home with me, and often the ones I took were books of poetry. I even remember one of the poems that impressed me greatly: “Three Bugs” by Alice Cary. It went like this:
Three little bugs in a basket,
And hardly room for two!
And one was yellow, and one was black,
And one like me or you.
Only those first four lines remained in my memory, (it was a very long poem), but I remembered the story. Somehow . . . two of the bugs crawled under the rugs, and one was left in the cold. How I worried about that poor little bug that was left out in the cold!
National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. I am pleased to celebrate poetry this month with the release of my new book:
